Research Summary
MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome — a novel class of mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs). It was first identified by Chang et al. in 2015 and appears to function as a systemic hormone, translocating from mitochondria to the nucleus to regulate metabolic gene expression.
In rodent models of diet-induced obesity, MOTS-c administration has been associated with apparent improvements in insulin sensitivity, reduced adiposity, and increased energy expenditure. Circulating MOTS-c levels decline with age, which has prompted research into its potential role in age-related metabolic decline.
