Research Summary
SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeted peptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane by binding to cardiolipin. It has been studied in preclinical models for its apparent cardioprotective and mitochondria-protective effects.
Preclinical studies have observed apparent reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, preservation of mitochondrial membrane potential, and protection against ischaemia-reperfusion injury. SS-31 has entered clinical trials for heart failure and other conditions. It is not TGA-approved in Australia and is available for laboratory research use only.
